Three minutes without air

Smoke, choking and cardiac arrest are the fastest killers in a home — and the cheapest to prepare for.

Smoke, not flames

Most UK fire deaths are caused by smoke inhalation, often before anyone wakes. A working alarm on every floor, tested monthly, is the single highest-value item in any kit. Add a sealed-battery alarm if you keep forgetting the 9V one.

Get low, get out, stay out

Agree an escape route and a second one, keep keys in a known place near the door, and close doors behind you as you go — a closed door buys minutes. Never go back in for possessions.

Learn CPR and choking first aid

Chest compressions and back blows are skills, not products. A free two-hour session at a local St John Ambulance or British Red Cross course covers both, and defibrillator locations are listed on the Circuit register.

Carbon monoxide

Boilers, log burners and camping stoves used indoors all produce it, and it is odourless. Fit a CO alarm near any fuel-burning appliance and never run a generator or barbecue inside during a power cut.
