Tyres
Check the tread depth and pressures, including the spare if you have one. The legal minimum tread in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, but more grip helps in wet and icy conditions.
Battery
Cold weather is hard on batteries. If the engine is slow to turn over, get the battery tested before winter. Flat batteries are a common reason to be stuck, so a charged jump starter in the boot is worth considering.
Screenwash and windows
Top up with a winter screenwash rather than plain water, which can freeze. Before setting off, clear ice and snow from every window, the mirrors and the lights.
Lights
Walk round the car and check every light works and is clean, including indicators, brake lights and fog lights.
